Cupcakes with the Queen

Mon, June 20, 2011
  • Events

You are invited to have cupcakes with the Queen! Join the Federation celebrations as the museum’s Queen hosts a right royal morning tea in King’s Hall.

Glass artist Wendy Fairclough’s new work The Illuminations will be on display for the first time. The Illuminations was created by Wendy in response to images and descriptions of the 1901 Federation celebrations. The same inspiration was used by the hundreds of children who created Federation Arches from Lego and glass at Museum of Australian Democracy and Canberra Glassworks workshops held earlier in the year.

During the Federation celebrations in 1901 people filled the city streets at night to see colourful fireworks and admire the arches and buildings lit up by thousands of lights. Many people also made their own lights. They carried tin cans with holes punched in them and a candle burning inside, or handmade paper lanterns.

Visit the museum and make your own paper lantern to add to the new Federation exhibition (or to take home!) and enjoy a cupcake…or two.
