Magnolia in bloom
Just in time for Canberra’s spring celebration of Floriade, this glorious Magnolia in the House of Representatives Wing courtyard has flowered. Beautifully sheltered from wind in this delightful little garden, the tree is best observed from one floor up—conveniently located next to the Library and Australian Prime Ministers Centre, and thus available to all visitors to the museum. It’s usually at its best for only a week or two, so we thought online visitors might appreciate a photo.
This garden is an unusual aspect of the building’s heritage values, being the most intact of the two outer courtyards created when the side wings were extended in the 1960s (Reps side) and 70s (Senate). The inner courtyards, dating back to 1927, are far more formal in design.
