It is a strange desire to seek power and to lose liberty.

The people never give up their liberties but under some delusion.

When a just cause reaches its flood-tide…whatever stands in its way must fall before its overwhelming force.

No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.

The cost of liberty is less than the price of repression.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

I have fought against white domination. I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a free and democratic society in which all persons will live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to see realised. But, my Lord, if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.

Democracy is a process, not a static condition. It is becoming, rather than being. It can be easily lost, but is never finally won.
