Predicaments

Predicaments of all kinds lurk around every corner of the political world. The political predicament can be a serious business for the politician, but for the cartoonist it is a metaphorical gold mine. When the moment is right cartoonists like Pickering and Pryor are able to use these metaphors to devastating – and devastatingly funny – effect.

Top: Whitlam loses his support in the election campaign that follows the dismissal of the Whitlam Government.

Bottom: Liberal Secretary, Tony Eggleton, ponders the Party’s leadership predicament – Malcolm Fraser or Andrew Peacock?

Cartoon by Larry Pickering, 1975.

Cartoon by Geoff Pryor, 1979.
