When the Roof Became Stars

Past exhibition: 08 October 2003 to 27 April 2004

Twelve months ago on 12 October 2002, 202 people, including 88 Australians, lost their lives when bombs were detonated at nightclubs full of people in the popular tourist destination, Bali.

In this exhibition, the public got an insight into the Australian Federal Police response to the tragic events of the Bali bombings.

In an unprecedented collaboration with Indonesian and Australian State police and international experts, the Australian Federal Police played a major role in dealing with the disaster and investigating the crime.

Their responsibilities included using scientific techniques to identify victims; supporting and counselling victims’ families and survivors; interviewing thousands of people to identify witnesses; and carrying out forensic analysis and reconstructions of multiple crime scenes.

Ultimately, Australian Federal Police helped identify a number of the Bali bomb suspects.

Through survivor accounts from police in the Sari Club at the time, the personal experiences of police officers during the investigation, and forensic investigation techniques, we gain an understanding of the enormity of the tragedy and the dedication and professionalism of the Australian Federal Police.
