A multimedia timeline will form a key visitor experience within the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, providing a central reference point for visitors to gain an understanding of the history of democracy.
The history of Australian democracy needs to be viewed within a larger international context, as part of a global history of western democracy —the ideas and principles that underpin Australian democracy have evolved over more than 2000 years. Since colonisation, these ideas and principles have been, and continue to be, shaped by Australian conditions and circumstances. Many events and people have contributed to the shaping of democratic institutions and processes in Australia. Australia has shaped its own democratic systems and can lay claim to many political firsts in the world.
An innovative online version of this timeline is being developed to complement the exhibition.
