Support Democracy in a Box
Inspire the next generation of active, informed citizens.
Democracy in a Box is a national education program delivering an innovative collection of resources designed for year 5 and 6 students across Australia to support their understanding of democracy and how to be active citizens. It provides curriculum-aligned material, including lesson plans, books, games, posters, activities, videos and a digital excursion with MoAD educators. Democracy in a Box:
- Expands access to high-quality civics education
- Inspires students to engage with their role in democracy
- Supports teachers with practical, adaptable resources
- Strengthens participation in communities often underrepresented
Launched in 2025, thanks to support from Tim Fairfax AC and Gina Fairfax AC, the pilot program delivered Democracy in a Box to 50 remote and regional schools across the Northern Territory and Queensland. Teacher feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many noting the resources filled an important gap in their classrooms and reinvigorated their Civics and Citizenship teaching.
Help us expand this program to a national scale and make it possible for young Australians, no matter where they live, to understand, value, and participate in our democracy.
'I liked learning new, useful information for the future and being able to learn with friends and being able to be more socially engaged and learning socially.'

'Outreach programs like Democracy in a Box can be transformative – they broaden horizons and provide regional students with the same opportunities as their metropolitan peers.'
Samara Koidis, Principal of Hermit Park State School, Townsville
'I loved that everything you needed was in the box – no need to search for anything. The books were engaging, and the lesson plans were well thought out.'
