Plaque presented to Dorothy Tangney

1943 - When she was elected to represent Western Australia in 1943 at the age of 36, Dorothy Margaret Tangney became Australia’s first woman senator.

To honour her election, Tangney’s former students and colleagues at Claremont Central School, Perth, proudly presented her with this engraved metal plaque. Having trained as a schoolteacher, Tangney took a passionate interest in education and social policy related to women and children during her 25-year political career.
