The Chain of Command
David Pope
My reporting on Afghanistan for Four Corners in 2007 and 2010 opened an unanticipated door on the subsequent war crimes saga, and a long legal battle involving Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith. In 2020 the Brereton Inquiry found ‘credible information of 23 incidents of the alleged unlawful killing of 39 individuals’. Years on, lingering questions about precisely how much ADF senior commanders knew - and their degree of culpability - remain unresolved.
