Infernos and floods

Sometimes the most disturbing character in a film isn’t a malevolent villain, a supernatural entity or a horrific monster. Rather, it’s the environment.

Floods, cyclones, erupting volcanoes, fires and even meteors from outer space have threatened the characters in many a movie. But this year, reality was often much more alarming than anything they could come up with in a Hollywood writers’ room.

In 2025 it’s still climate change that most worries much of humankind, including our cartoonists. South-east Queensland was battered by Tropical Cyclone Alfred and Los Angeles by out-of-control wildfires. After shelving the idea of nuclear power – and even as it tries to recover from a shocking election result – the Coalition is creating further divisions in its own ranks through its stance on Net-Zero.
