In 2007 John Howard became only the second prime minister – and first Liberal one – to lose his own seat in a federal election, after Stanley Bruce at the 1929 election. Peter Dutton, who was seen as politically close to Howard, was the first Opposition leader to do the same. However, at the other end of the political spectrum, former Greens leader Adam Bandt now shares the same dubious honour.
