Betroom

A young child in an AFL uniform lies in his bedroom, surrounded by posters from betting companies.

A report by the Grattan Institute, an independent Australian public policy think tank, in September called for a complete ban on sports gambling advertisements. A month earlier, Bill Shorten had confirmed that the government would not entirely ban gambling advertising. Glen Le Lievre’s cartoon suggests that such ads have become such an unavoidable part of our consumption of professional sport that they now even appear on the posters children use to decorate their bedroom walls, changing the way they think about sport.
