In September Australia’s second oldest literary journal, Meanjin, was discontinued by its publisher on ‘purely financial grounds’. Founded in 1940, the journal played an important role in Australia’s cultural landscape and featured work by writers such as Helen Garner, Alexis Wright, David Malouf, Judith Wright and Patrick White. It was rumoured that Meanjin was under pressure from the university’s council after it published an essay critical of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry and its support for Israel’s incursion into Gaza in 2023.
