Though bushfires are usually a state responsibility, Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s decision to take a family holiday to Hawaii while the country was ablaze was widely questioned. Expressing regret for any anxiety his absence had caused, he commented, ‘I don’t hold a hose, mate.’ His quip was seen by many as a misstep that incensed communities battling the infernos back home.
