A Lost Soul Wailing

Will Mahony
Cartoonist Will Mahony (1905–1982) alludes to a fear of impending war. On Mount Somewhere-or-Other, an alarmed Prime Minister Joseph Lyons points to an array of urgent warnings, the background reveals the Australian Parliament is ‘closed ’til further notice’. It was published in the lead-up to the Second World War, on 28 January 1939, during a week in which Lyons announced that peace was under threat and that stronger defences were needed.
