Out of the frame explores the way some contemporary political cartoons are jumping off the print pages to occupy a greater variety of physical and digital spaces in our environment.
Traditionally, political cartoons were found in paper format in newspapers and magazines. The political cartoonist's toolkit included a pencil, pen or brush, and ink or watercolour. Many cartoonists now work digitally, and others work in a variety of visual art mediums.
These non-traditional political cartoons appear on gallery walls, in the streets or on your mobile phone. They can take the form of GIFs, sculptures or even puppets, and they can reach new audiences who might not regularly encounter cartoons. But they retain the wit and insightfulness of their more static two-dimensional counterparts.
