In April Treasurer Jim Chalmers announced ‘the biggest reforms to merger settings in almost 50 years’. The ACCC was given greater powers to review mergers and acquisitions before they happen. The federal government claimed the new rules would help competition and benefit consumers, but Andrew Dyson questions whether a single extra tooth is enough.
