On 15 April 2024 40-year-old Queenslander Joel Cauchi stabbed and killed six people and injured 12 others, including an infant, in the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping mall. It was the worst mass killing in the state since the Quakers Hill Nursing Home fire in 2011, when 11 people died in an arson attack. Cauchi was shot dead at the scene by Inspector Amy Scott, a New South Wales police officer. She was later awarded the Commissioner’s Valour Award ‘for displaying exceptional bravery in a life-threatening situation’.
