Tourists gather around George Washington's tomb. Their guide says, 'And here you can see where he turned over in his grave in 2016, here again on January 6th 2021, and here, here and here since the commencement of the 2024 election campaign.'

George Washington served as the first president of the United States, having earlier led the 13 American colonies in the US War of Independence (1775–1783) against Great Britain. On 6 January 2021 Donald Trump, who had been elected the 45th president in 2016, called for the 2020 election results to be overturned and encouraged his supporters to march on the US Capitol. Herbert’s cartoon suggests that the spirit of this ‘founding father’ — widely venerated for his honesty and truthfulness — was clearly troubled by many of Trump’s statements and actions.
