In 2020, Prime Minister Scott Morrison praised New South Wales for its ‘gold standard’ in suppressing COVID-19. The Delta strain outbreak, which began in June 2021 when a driver transporting foreign aircrews became infected, revealed weaknesses in the state’s response. Gaps in the public health orders meant the driver was not required to wear a mask or be vaccinated.
