Public Housing

In a long queue of people walking toward a public housing block, one child says, 'We're here in the hope of eventually having somewhere safe and affordable to live. How about you?' Another child replies, 'I want to be prime minister.'

Anthony Albanese is Australia’s first prime minister raised in social housing, growing up with his mother and maternal grandparents in a council house in Sydney. Peter Sully gently pokes fun at Albanese for often referring to this aspect of his childhood. As Australia’s housing crisis grew in 2023, other cartoonists questioned whether the government was doing enough to help Australians who are struggling with housing affordability, despite his background.
