Early in the year the Australian Bureau of Statistics recommended a new set of questions relating to sexual orientation and gender identity for the 2026 Census. After initially being approved by MP Andrew Leigh, the government later scrapped the questions, describing them as ‘divisive’. Backlash from within the government’s own ranks followed, and in September it altered its position to include a new topic of ‘sexual orientation and gender’ in the Census.
