Another Death in Custody

Text reads, 'Another black death in custody.' A First Nations woman says, 'My husband is a very sick man and needs his heart tablets for blood pressure.' A correctional officer says, 'No I can't allow them in, our nurse will take care of him.'

According to statistics published by the Australian Institute of Criminology, as of 20 October 2024 there had been 18 Indigenous deaths in custody since the beginning of the year, constituting almost a quarter of the total deaths in custody. Danny Eastwood refers to the case of a man who had died of heart complications the previous year in Perth’s Hakea Prison. His family claimed his requests for medication before his death had been ignored.
