Don't Mind the Gap

On the 16th anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the creation of a new position: a National Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People. Data released around the same time showed that only five out of 19 Closing the Gap targets are on track to be reached by 2031. Fiona Katauskas suggests the gap is not just about health and social outcomes, but also about the need to understand Australia’s history.
