The Vision

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paints on a small canvas. A large canvas signed by former Prime Minister Bob Hawke looms behind him.

Jim Pavlidis

Throughout the year commentators speculated about when an election might be called. Pavlidis’ cartoon is suggesting that Anthony Albanese’s achievements as Prime Minister have been modest as he approaches the end of his first term. In contrast, by most measures, Bob Hawke is thought by many to rank as one of Australia’s most successful prime ministers. In 1987, with a reforming agenda and despite declining popularity, Hawke led Labor to a third consecutive term in office — the first time the party had ever achieved the feat.
