The resignation of Liberal MP Alan Tudge following the Robodebt scandal triggered a by-election in the east Melbourne seat of Aston on 1 April 2023. Just as the 2001 Aston by-election was considered a test of the Liberal Party’s introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), 2023’s by-election was Peter Dutton’s first such test of his leadership of the Coalition.
