Unpaid Student Placements

A colourful, cluttered poster explains the current state of university students working unpaid placement hours to get their degrees, resulting in many not finishing their degrees. In the centre, students run to a finish line while trying to avoid dangerous obstacles.

In May the federal government announced several measures to support tertiary students, including lowering the HECS–HELP loan indexation rate and introducing means-tested paid placements for students studying social work, teaching and nursing. The proposed payment was $319.50 for a week’s work. Sam Wallman’s cartoon does the maths: that equates to roughly $8 an hour, well below the minimum wage.
