Lest We Forget

The statue of a WWI and WWII veteran looks in concern at explosions in the distance labelled 'Ukraine' and 'Gaza'.

There are more than 4,000 war memorials across Australia, with one in practically every country town. A great many of them use the motif of a digger on the pedestal with head bowed and arms reversed. Harry Bruce imagines one of these diggers as looking on with grave concern at today’s conflicts. This year on Anzac Day many may have reflected not just on the Australian lives lost in past conflicts, but also on the lives currently being lost in Europe and the Middle East.
