In February the Australian Government’s Productivity Commission released the latest data on progress on Closing the Gap, the national strategy that aims to reduce First Nations disadvantage. The data showed that only five of the strategy’s 19 targets were on track to be met by 2031. Johannes Leak’s cartoon was published in the same month, reminding readers of the government’s failed ‘Yes’ campaign for an Indigenous voice to parliament in late 2023, and suggesting it was substitute for real action.
