Not Kid's Stuff

A couple talk to a medical professional under a sign that reads 'Family Planning.' One shelf behind them is full of birth control methods. The medical professional says, 'And these aren't technically contraceptives but they do stop people from getting pregnant…' while pointing to a shelf full of blocks that read, 'News, cost of living soars, housing to stay unaffordable, hottest day ever, pervasive sense of doom remains.'

Fiona Katauskas nails one of the ironies at the heart of the cost-of-living crisis. Economists and politicians suggest that population growth contributes to economic growth. However, as some inquiries, such as 2023’s Inquiry into Cost of Living Pressures in the ACT, have uncovered, the cost-of-living and housing crises, not to mention climate change, are discouraging some younger Australians from having children.
